Hi people today I will be sharing with you my work I did for social studies that is based on why we needed a treaty. Here it is:

Introduction
My topic will be about why we needed a treaty. These are my three key ideas why we needed a treaty in the 1800. In that time 100,000 maoris and 200,000 europeans were living in New zealand. These are the main ideas i will be talking about.
The behavior of the whalers, the ambition of the missionaries to help the maori, the musket war, trading, treaty of waitangi, and the maori lawless ways.

The behavior of the Whalers
In the early 1800’s whalers from london sailed the pacific seas hunting down whales, for they were used for oil. But these were only found in the territories of Aotearoa which in now know as new zealand. Back then once the whalers got what they came to hunt for they would come to shore where they would drink and get drunk, and lay with maori women. This was a worry for they maori chefs because this will set a bad example for the maori people.

The ambition of the missionaries to help the maori.
Way back in the early ages the Maori people had their own way of thinking of how the world was created. So as they might still teach in primary, the story of ranginui and papatuanuku. When the europeans landed on the shores of the maori people they brand with them their own theology on the world's creation. Their side of creation was Adam and eve. So when the missionaries came they tried to change maori peoples way of belief and stop them from worshiping pagan gods and worship christ.

The musket war.
The musket war is one of the first of many wars in new zealand. Between 1807-1845 3,000 wars have raged throughout new zealand among our native inhabitants. But once the british settlers came to Aotearoa most of the british settlers traded for food and goods, and the maori traded that for their muskets. Many tribes started to trade more for these muskets in order to take revenge on past defeats.

Trading
Trading is about what i just said in the musket war. When the british arrived in new zealand many of the maori chiefs offered them water, fresh foods, and sometimes women. While the british offered them food, clothing, and sometimes muskets.
Most maori grew great relationships with the british people. Many of the maoris even had families with the british people.

Treaty of waitangi
The treaty of waitangi is one of the most important events of the new zealand history. The treaty was originally form in the 1800’s. This treaty was a way that Aotearoa could be a colonised country for britain. This treaty  caused many of confusions which led to arguments which led to people making severe damage to the country. When the treaty was being formed the maori chiefs thought they would keep their manna(authority) but instead the english translation of the maori wording was that they would have to give all their authority to the queen.

The maori ‘s lawless ways
Back in the 1800s maoris fought with each other over land and power. These wars killed over 100,000 native maori people. But things got even worse. When the british people landed in aotearoa and traded their muskets with food  they started using those against the other tribes. By now the tribes had no choice but get a musket.

Conclusion
To conclude my essay i just want to say that the reason why we needed a treaty is so that we could live in peace.
